Understanding Work

Understanding why you want to work is important and knowing the definition of work will help you to get started. We ask the following questions in this module and your answers will help us to help you.

  • Do you want to work to earn a living?
  • Do you want to have a sense of purpose?
  • Do you want to be with other people?
  • What is Volunteering – how will it help you?

 

Skills for Work

This module is not about specific skills like using a computer or cooking chips at MacDonald’s. It is about your attitude and the skills of reading and writing. We look at your Employability Skills as well as:

  • Resume Writing
  • Interview Skills

 

Communication skills for the workplace

What is good communication? What is the difference between listening and hearing? We look at different types of communication and what is appropriate in the workplace. We also discuss:

  • Self-Respect
  • Giving and Receiving Feedback

 

Computer Basics

This course is for beginners, as well as those who would like to refresh their skills. We cover the following:

  • Getting started with the Computer
  • Creating and saving a document
  • Software or Programs
  • The Internet and Email

 

Ready for Work

Once you have understood what work is and believe you have the skills needed, you then need to be ready for work and this covers several topics like:

  • Unsupervised Work and Team Work
  • Getting to Work
  • Dressing for Work
  • Expectations – yours and the organisation
